This is one of countless such isolated positions. Some have been out of contact with command for years, and must conserve food and ammunition to mere subsistence levels. Some are swallowed up completely by the churning morass of the endless no-man's land.
The trench crusade is such a large and prolonged conflict that entire divisions have been known to simply disappear, entire armies lost and forgotten, entire generations ground into the mud.
